REFLEXION

REFLEXION

Cultivating Twitter
By Lisa Chamberlin and Kay Lehmann
August 10, 2010

In a recent article ("Finding a Place for Twitter in Higher Education," May 20, 2010, eLearnMag.org), Hend Suliman Al-Khalifa reported some of the findings in a Faculty Focus 2009 survey, "Twitter in Higher Education: Usage Habits and Trends of Today's College Faculty."

In the article, Al-Khalifa cthe findings of the more than 2,000 respondents, writing that according to the survey, the majority of higher education thinks Twitter is a gigantic time suck with little to no educational value. While she accurately reported the findings, she missed reporting the bigger picture, namely, that while approximately 30 percent of the surveyed higher education professionals tweet, currently only 10 percent of the general Internet-using public makes regular use of Twitter. The college ranks are outpacing the public in adoption nearly 3 to 1.

As Twitter continues to expand its reach within the public, it exponentially expands it within higher education.

Why is there so much derisive criticism of Twitter by educational institutions that are rapidly making use of the technology? Part of the answer is the learning curve. Twitter looks simple. Indeed, it has a simple interface. But to see its value beyond celebrity tweeting is a bit more complex.

Twitter is much like gardening. A shovel and vegetable seeds are simple objects, but growing a vegetable garden is much more complex. As gardeners study horticultural techniques, read what the experts have to say, and chat with knowledgeable neighbors, they begin to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Those who don't put in the energy waste time, get weeds, and have little to show for their effort. Instead of the no-to-low cost of the salad grown at home, the weekend gardener ends up paying a much higher cost to get the same beneficial nutrients at the store.

Twitter is just like this. The Twitter "garden" flourishes only when you put in the time to cultivate it. Twitter is so much more than a status update, but the seeds have to be planted and watered first.

Joanna C. Dunlap and Patrick R. Lowenthal expressed it well in their 2009 Educause Quarterly article, "Horton Hears a Tweet": "With Twitter, as with all social-networking tools, the value of the experience hinges on three things: 1) whom you are connected to and with; 2) how frequently you participate; and 3) how conscientious you are about contributing value to the community."

We never would have known about Lowenthal's contribution to the social-networking discussion if we hadn't been Twitter users. We saw his informational tweets on another user's Twitter feed, discovered he was the academic technology coordinator at CU Online at the University of Colorado Denver, and began following him. When we were in the process of writing a book chapter about Twitter, we tweeted that we were doing some research on the topic of Twitter in higher education, and Lowenthal tweeted back with this and other resource articles. This give-and-take is the nature of Twitter, the sharing of resources, the meeting (or challenging) of minds, collaboration, and broadening the conversation.

Those higher education Twitter naysayers may be too ensconced in their silos on the university campus to find value in the broader discussions going on about teaching and learning. I hope not. I hope they just haven't figured it out yet. If they are willing to cultivate it, build a community of experts through it, and use the appropriate tools like hashtags, retweets, Tweetdeck or HootSuite, they can't help but see its value grow as they build or expand their personal learning network. They may soon wonder how they ever lived without it.

There is also a decoration, the Venezuelan Order of Andrés Bello.

He accompanied Alexander von Humboldt in a part of his Latin American expedition (1800) and was for a short time Simón Bolívar's teacher.[1] His relationships with both men became a major factor in cultivating his ideas for his intellectual career. The United Kingdom availed the services of Admiral Sir Thomas John Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, Marquês do Maranhão, GCB, RN [Royal Navy] (14 December 1775 - 31 October 1860) to serve the Independence of Venezuela.[2]

Making Education (Double) Count

Boosting Student Learning via Social and Emotional Learning and New Media Literacy Skills

By Laurel Felt

July 29, 2010

Schools and afterschool programs must devote more attention to fostering what we call the new media literacies: a set of cultural competencies and social skills that young people need in the new media landscape. Participatory culture shifts the focus of literacy from one of individual expression to community involvement.

Jenkins, Purushotma, Clinton, Weigel, and Robinson, 2006, p. 4.

Participatory, engagement-driven activities that tap and foster social and emotional learning (SEL) and new media literacies (NML) meaningfully enrich students' learning of the basics as well as boost physical wellness and social functioning.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) comprises self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Notable programs such as Lions Quest Skills for Life, Paths (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies), and School Connect offer lessons in: recognizing and managing stress; interpreting facial cues and body language; problem-solving; resisting bullying; identifying personal strengths and challenges; and setting goals.

Skeptics may dismiss such lessons as artifacts of a toothless, politically correct, "touchy-feely" era. But empirical research has found that pursuing competency in these areas allows one to build a solid base, to establish the intrapersonal and interpersonal support networks necessary for holistic health and achievement. Education
Learning that takes place in schools or school-like environments (formal education) or in the world at large; the transmission of the values and accumulated knowledge of a society. In developing cultures there is often little formal education; children learn from their environment and activities, and the adults around them act as teachers. In more complex societies, where there is more knowledge to be passed on, a more selective and efficient means of transmission — the school and teacher — becomes necessary. The content of formal education, its duration, and who receives it have varied widely from culture to culture and age to age, as has the philosophy of education. Some philosophers (e.g., John Locke) have seen individuals as blank slates onto which knowledge can be written. Others (e.g., Jean-Jacques Rousseau) have seen the innate human state as desirable in itself and therefore to be tampered with as little as possible, a view often taken in alternative education. See also behaviourism; John Dewey; elementary education; igher education; kindergarten; lyceum movement; progressive education; public school; special education; teaching.

Profession of those who give instruction, especially in an elementary or secondary school or a university. The achinteg profession is a relatively new one. Traditionally, parents, elders, religious leaders, and sages were responsible for teaching children how to behave and think and what to believe. Germany introduced the first formal criteria for the education of teachers in the 18th century. In the 19th century, as society became more industrialized, the concept of schooling became more universal. In industrialized nations today, most teachers are university graduates. Teacher-training programs usually include both general and specialized academic, cultural, or vocational courses; the study of educational principles; and a series of professional courses combined with practical experience in a typical school setting. Most countries also require professional certification following formal training. See also National Education Association

Ten Truths about Leadership

In the last 30 years James Kouzes and Barry Posner, authors of the highly regarded leadership classic The Leadership Challenge, have studied leaders all over the world. They understand leadership.

The question they get time and time again is “What’s new in leadership?” They answer that while the context of leadership as changed dramatically, “the content of leadership has not changed much at all. The fundamental behaviors, actions, and practices of leaders have remained essentially the same since we first began researching and writing about leadership over three decades ago. Much has changed, but there’s a whole lot more that’s stayed the same.” That is probably the fundamental truth of leadership development. With that understanding, we can develop leaders in all contexts and weed out fact from fiction.

Based on thirty years of research—more than one million responses to their leadership assessment—Kouzes and Posner have gathered together in The Truth about Leadership, the ten truths that have stood the test of time and they hold true both globally and cross-generationally. They devote a chapter to each of these ten concepts:

Truth #1 You Make a Difference. Before you lead you have to believe that you can have a positive impact on others. When you believe you can make a difference, you position yourself to hear the call to lead.

Truth #2 Credibility Is the Foundation of Leadership. If people don’t believe in you, they won’t willingly follow you. You must do what you say you are going to do. This means being so clear about your beliefs that you can live them every day.

Truth #3 Values Drive Commitment. You need to know what you believe in because you can only fully commit to the organization or cause when there is a good fit between what you value and the organization values. This is true too, for the people you lead.

Truth #4 Focusing on the Future Sets Leaders Apart. You have to be forward looking; it’s the quality that most differentiates leaders from individual contributors. You need to spend time reflecting on the future. Big dreams that resonate with others inspire and energize.

Truth #5 You Can’t Do It Alone. Leadership is a team sport, and you need to engage others in the cause. You need to enable others to be even better than they already are.
